“I have been a full time painter since switching from a medical career to return to my love of painting and creating art. I live in the south west of Britain, on the edge of Dartmoor, with Helen my wife, and our two boys JJ and Ben.
Since becoming a Christian in my teens, I have had a natural tendency to express my faith creatively, whether the subject is a Dartmoor landscape or a meditation on a Biblical passage. I am interested in light, colour and atmosphere, and in the way the landscape can speak to the spiritual part of each one of us. I also enjoy life drawing and portrait work. Much of my original work is now in pastel, which I value for its speed and versatility, though I enjoy working in other media too.”
A meditation on the Calvary scene; the dark and red-tinged cloudscape speaks of sacrifice and earth- shattering forces at work, while the brightly lit edge of cloud high above reminds us of final victory.
The verse on the back of the greetings card reads, "For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross." Colossians 1: 19-20
Customers' comments: "It stirs my heart." "It helps me to witness the first Good Friday. The beautiful but turbulent colouring is very powerful."
The verse on the back of the greetings card reads, "He is not here; he has risen!" Luke 24 : 6
"Conveying the emotion and amazement of Mary Magdalene as she meets the risen Lord outside the tomb, the stark reality of the empty tomb and graveclothes, just as described in Johns’s gospel, chapter 20." James Martin
This image and its particular viewpoint had been in my mind for many years before I tried creating it as a painting.
The verse on the back of the greetings card reads, ‘Those whose hope is in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles ...’ (Isaiah 40, 31).
I love to paint big cloudscapes with their drama of huge space, light and shadow. Soaring like eagles in God’s warmth and light is what this is about.
The verse on the back of the New Beginning greetings card reads, "See, I will create new heavens and a new earth. The former things will not be remembered, nor will they come to mind. But be glad and rejoice forever in what I will create, for I will create Jerusalem to be a delight and its people a joy." Isaiah 65: 17-18
Customers' comments: "It is full of light. It is hard to capture light in a painting, but the artist has caught hold of the Holy Spirit and Jesus and reflected them here." " The use of greys and then the rainbow interrupting the sky is beautiful." "It is so peaceful and gives hope for a new beginning for all."
The text on the mug reads, "Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." Isaiah 40 : 30-31
The verse on the back of the greetings card is, "The eyes of the Lord are on those who fear him, on those whose hope is in his unfailing love." Psalm 33 : 18
This is one of a series of paintings based on the character, Aslan, who represents Jesus in the Narnia books by C.S.Lewis.
The verse on the back of the greetings card reads,"For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29 : 11
"God had a plan. Joseph trusted that God would never leave him nor forsake him at his darkest hour." James Martin
The verse on the back of the greetings card reads, "He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God." Psalm 40 : 3
"This picture was inspired by the lame man in Acts 3:8 who praised God extravagantly for his healing." James Martin
