“Many will identify the woman as a contemporary depiction of Mary the Mother of Our Lord Jesus, and that is good. Mary’s miraculous pregnancy is clearly the focus of the image. However I wanted to make the picture into a hymn for all expectant mothers including those in the Bible such as Elizabeth (Luke 1:23) and Sarah (Genesis 18:10-14), or Hannah in the Old Testament (1 Samuel 1:20).” Philip McMullen
