“I was inspired by baptisms in our church recently. It is always lovely to see new Christians taking this step. I then thought about the baptism of Christ and how profound an event it was and how it says so much. My thought was to depict it in a simple symbolic way with simple imagery. I wanted also to hint at  something more atmospheric and iconic. I find pastel a good medium for experimenting rapidly with subtleties of perspective and light and shade. It allows the possibility of overlaying with bright accents of colour. When using pastel in this way I apply it directly, building up the image with no underlying drawing.”  James Martin
