My soul magnifies by Philip McMullen

“I wanted to capture the interaction between the two women, Mary and Elizabeth, conveying the significance of their meeting. I was more concerned with conveying the beauty and wonder of their respective words, than with a more historical portrayal. Mary, soon to be the mother of Jesus, is speaking, or perhaps singing her Magnificat to her older cousin.  Elizabeth is expecting the birth of her baby, who will be John the Baptist.” Philip McMullen

The account of the meeting of Mary and Elizabeth in Luke Chapter 1 was Philip’s inspiration for this picture.

When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. 42 In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!” And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me holy is his name.”

You can see a short video in which Philip talks about his drawings here.
