a framed pastel painting by James Martin

“As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” Matthew 3, v16,17
“As mentioned in my video, I was inspired by baptisms in our church recently. It is always lovely to see new Christians taking this step. I then thought about the baptism of Christ and how profound an event it was and how it says so much. My thought was to depict it in a simple symbolic way with simple imagery while trying to hint at something more atmospheric and iconic. I find pastel a good medium for experimenting rapidly with subtleties of perspective and light and shade. While allowing the possibility to overlay with bright accents of colour. When using pastel in this way I apply it directly, building up the image with no underlying drawing.” James
