Amazing grace by Sue Newham

“I wanted to paint a picture based on the parable of the lost sheep, but from a very close up viewpoint to make the story feel very personal. As the picture developed, it reminded me how helpless the sheep is. It has got into a dangerous situation through its own free will, but is completely unable to rescue itself. The only rescue comes through the shepherd, who is willing to risk injury, and in Jesus’ case death, to rescue the powerless.”  Sue Newham

We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.” Isaiah 53 : 6

I was listening to Songs of Praise and the wonderful hymn, “Amazing grace” came on. The lines made me think of the picture I was painting and I decided instantly on the title. ‘Amazing grace, How sweet the sound, That saved a wretch like me, I once was lost, but now I’m found, Was blind, but now I see.‘”

You can see a short video of Sue talking about this painting here.

The painting is oil on a canvas primed with very dark blue acrylic paint. The canvas measures 60cm square, is 2cm deep and  is painted around the edges. It will be sent out from the artist in the UK.
