The Olympics is coming! Be prepared!

At Spring Harvest, I went along to an excellent seminar about the church and the Olympics by a speaker from More than Gold, who was passionate about the opportunities that the Olympics will bring for churches to engage with their communities. He was at the Vancouver winter Olympics and said that Olympic fever gripped Canada at that time, but that churches were, on the whole, disengaged from the community excitement. He said that many church leaders later expressed their regret that they did not take a more active part in the national event.
There are so many ways that churches can get involved in London 2012, from hosting international athletes families, to offering refreshments to visitors, from putting on large screens so that whole communities can watch the opening ceremony together, to sports camps for youngsters.
AND DON’T THINK THAT OLYMPIC FEVER WON’T GRIP YOUR TOWN, JUST BECAUSE YOU ARE OUTSIDE LONDON!
The Olympics is going to be HUGE.
Jon Burns said during his talk, “I just pray that the church won’t forget about the Olympics and go off to the New Wine bible week as usual.”
I personally felt very challenged by that, especially as the Veritasse stand is a regular visitor to New Wine. I have decided that the call to community is more important. I will not be going to New Wine. I will be staying in Newtown, Powys and helping my church to reach out to the community.
