Personal Statement

My work reflects my interests in Biblical theology, poetry and the landscape culture and history of rural north Monmouthshire where I live. I began study for an MA in printmaking in 2008 and from the latter part of that year into 2010, my work has been concerned with ‘mapping the territory’; the territory being the physical area of roads, paths and farm land around my home and also the cultural territory, living, as I do, as an incomer in a long established rural community. This work has dealt with socio-economic and socio-political issues providing comment on the countryside as a place of work, a place to live and a place of recreation. Litter (as textured ‘found objects’) has provided much of the source material for my printmaking. Litter has reference to place and time and to contemporary culture.

Photographer, Sam Hughes, and I have been working on the TRACKS AND TRACES project for a year or so. Sam and I live around 8 miles apart on different sides of the Monmouthshire – Herefordshire border. We are using as the source of our inspiration, the route between our homes with its dramatic Welsh Marches landscape, medieval churches, manor houses and castle, villages and country characters. We hope to complete the project by the end of 2010.  Its final outcome will include drawings, prints, photographs and artists’ books.

I use a variety of techniques in my work but principally, collagraph, woodcut, linocut and offset. Often I produce monotypes incorporating more than one printing method and with the addition of text and chine colleé. I hope to draw the viewer into the imagery to explore layered and often ambiguous meanings. I exhibit widely.  In the past twelve months I have had work in a number of exhibitions and galleries including; Wrexham Print International, RWA Open Print 2009, Original Print Gallery Dublin, Worcester Cathedral, Apple Store Gallery, Brockhampton, Gallery 54 and Parkfields Galleries Ross-on-Wye, Off the Wall Gallery, Landaff, Washington Gallery, Penarth and Alabasters, Pottstown, Pennsylvania USA. In 2010 planned exhibitions include artists’ books in the Climate Gallery, New York , April 2010 and The Art Shop, Abergavenny, June 2010.
