What do you think?
Textile & mixed media reflective hangings & banners or stylised landscapes & abstract pieces often incorporating layering with a mix of hand and machine stitch, old and new fabrics, buttons, beads and sequins combined with a sprinkling of unusual everyday items.
Couched, curved and wavy lines are a regular feature of my work and I am inspired by the natural world, colour, experience or seeing something in a new way.
From the rough starting points of drawing or collage to a more detailed permanent stitched record, my attempt is to share the way I see the world differently; to draw attention to the reality or detail that so many seem to miss or take for granted. My work is the celebration of the joy of nature, life, colour or conversely to draw attention to a feeling, an ambiguity, or wrong in the world.
I believe in the importance of combining the old and the new; combining traditional techniques with contemporary ideas and unusual or unexpected combinations of materials, gleaned from a lifetime of saving things that “might come in useful”. I particularly enjoy both using “leftovers” – scraps of fabric & thread from other projects, layering and combining the unexpected; plastic bag, glass, wire, string, a singed envelope, a sweet wrapper that happens to be the correct colour or texture. You never know what you may find in some of my pictures!
A lifelong love of colourful fabrics, buttons beads and a child’s fascination with the imagined treasury of shiny wrappers and interesting small items ensures that magpie- like I still collect and hoard other people’s rubbish to incorporate into my work.
I also work as a creative practitioner, in primary schools, arts and health, community arts, family learning and creative prayer.
