Light in the darkness by Dawn Waters-Baker
I prayed a long time about this painting as I wanted to show hope in suffering in a way that everyone could relate to.
At first I had a wheelchair in the picture but then thought that would make the viewer feel, "that's them" instead of seeing themselves in it. For that reason, I had the figure seated much like he was just getting up from bed and the weight of his day is just crashing in on him like a storm. I love the emotion of the sky (as many of you know that's something I love to paint) and so I felt that it would lend itself to how suffering feels: like there is nothing but darkness. I painted a quiet soft light coming in on the right as God's presence. He is not overtaking the man and in some sense the man has not even noticed the light yet but God is there.
