Rooted liberation by Carl Irving

This mixed media picture explores the mystery that when we are firmly rooted in Christ we experience our greatest freedom.

The verse on the back of the greetings card reads, “Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.” John 15 : 4

Encircled in his love by Wendy Ross

One of a series of images painted for Passiontide in 2015, I felt inspired by the women we read of in Scripture, who were closest to Jesus. In the Crucifixion, we are deeply moved by the grace, courage and compassion personified in Mary, the Mother of Jesus. In the Resurrection, we witness the joyful reunion of Mary Magdalene with ‘Rabboni’ in the garden. The natural femininity within the painting is echoed within the circular flow of movement, in a palette of the palest blush to deep crimson rose.
‘Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?’ Jesus said to her, ‘Mary.’                 John 20: 15-16

Face down by Sue Newham

This painting is based on the passage where Moses encounters the glory of God in the burning bush. We too have times of revelation about how worthy God is of our worship and adoration. At these times, we recognise that being humble before him is the only meaningful response.

The verse on the back of the greetings card reads, “Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom.” Psalm 145 : 3

To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood.”

The cross by Catherine Stephens

The verse on the back of the greetings card reads, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3 : 16

“I  didn’t want to paint a highly realistic version of Jesus on the cross. It’s not my style and also I don’t believe the agony and awfulness of it all can be adequately conveyed through a painting. However, this is my interpretation- Jesus on the cross, done in a semi-abstract way. I particularly wanted to show how the sky turned dark in the hour that Jesus died, and although He is hanging there in surrender, in muted colours, there is strength in His arms, strength to save us.”  Catherine Stephens

Set a fire down in my soul by Catherine Stephens

The verse on the back of the card reads, “When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realised that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.” Acts 4 : 13

“There’s a song by Will Reagan which has the wonderful lyric ‘Set a fire down in my soul that I can’t contain and I can’t control, I want more of you God!’ I painted this heart-on-fire using various printing techniques. I wanted the colours to be really warming and convey the sense that the fire is not the burning-up, destructive kind but the powerful, ongoing fire of God. The painting speaks of how God wants to keep our hearts on fire for him. We have to spend time with Him and ask for that fire, seeking out His heart of love for us!”   Catherine Stephens

The eagle by Catherine Stephens

The verse on the back of the card reads, “Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” Isaiah 40:31

“I love this verse in Isaiah and thought it would be great to have a painting to remind me, for when I get tired or downhearted, that God has the strength to lift me up. As the painting of the eagle progressed I ‘homed in’ on just the pinions of the wings – the part that to me embodied the strength of the wings. I had to crop the image of the whole eagle to emphasise this power and strength. I was glad I did. I hope it speaks to people of God’s unending encouragement and capacity to lift us.”  Catherine Stephens

The invitation by Joanna Leidenhag

The verse on the back of the greetings card reads, “ For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life inChrist Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6 : 23

‘The Invitation’ was painted to show those who don’t know God that His invitation for a relationship with Him was open to them. During a time of change in my life, this image  has also become an image of trusting God to lead us into new seasons of life. Although the light is warm and colourful, you cannot see exactly what is behind it. New Life by Amanda Steel

The verse on the back of the greetings card reads, ““I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14 : 6

“The cross is a doorway into a new life, and the light of that life shines into the darkness. What’s actually through that doorway is hidden, as many things are with God. When we choose to step into that new life we do it in faith, trusting that when we can’t see ahead, he is there to guide us. I’ve shown the foot of the cross drawing back like a curtain to remind us: ‘With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last. The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom’ Mark 15:37-38”

The gift by Amanda Steel

The verses on the back of the greetings card reads, “My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.” Psalm 139 : 15-16

“This painting shows God giving us the gift of Jesus as a baby.  It shows that the physical side of events is what we can see happening on the Earth, but the spiritual part, such as a human spirit being created, begins somewhere else and is given by God. Although this picture is based on Jesus, it can be interpreted to be any baby. They are all gifts from God and greatly loved by him. Whether they are being given to the world or leaving it, He is with them.”

Not a mistake by Amanda Steel

The verse on the back of the greetings card reads, “For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight.”  Ephesians 1 : 4

“Our DNA comes from our parents and many of our physical, emotional and mental characteristics are from family members, but is this all we are? The Bible says that our spirits are completely unique, designed and created by God long before anyone else knows of our existence.  I wanted to illustrate in my painting that no one is a mistake. Maybe your conception and birth wasn’t planned by your parents.  Maybe you feel insignificant and lost or unnoticed in a big world. But you were lovingly and deliberately crafted by God, who did plan your birth and has a purpose for your life.  You were carefully created to love and be loved by him.”

The hairs of your head by Amanda Steel

The verse on the back of the greetings card reads, “Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered.” Luke 12 : 7

“When my children were born I was amazed to discover how captivating I found every part of them, their ears, feet, the shape of their bellies, and  I particularly loved the way their newborn hair swirled around the crown of their heads.  I found something special in looking at them as they were turned away from me, almost as if it was a glimpse of their independence. I recognise they are their own person and will one day be taking their own path. As I took in every little hair, blemish and wrinkle on their heads, I realised that this is how the Father looks at us. When we are unaware, even when we turn away, he knows us so well. He watches us so intently. He has every hair on our head numbered.”

Prayer by Sue Newham

The verse on the back of the greetings card reads, “ For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” Ephesians 6 : 12

“This painting represents a picture that God gave me of our prayers rising up and becoming part of the battle between the angels and the powers of darkness in the spiritual realm. It is a reminder of the power of prayer.”

The power and the glory by Rebecca Newell

“After a bad weekend, I started to paint a tranquil picture to calm my thoughts and focus on God. When I finished, I realised  that I had not painted a God of serenity but an awesome, powerful, BIG God! I know the plans by Rebecca Newell

The verse on the back of the greetings card reads, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29 : 11

‘I have plans to prosper you and not to harm you’ can seem hard for some people to grasp. I work with a lot of broken people and recognise that I am broken myself in some areas. Trusting that God will make good what is broken does not always mean that you will receive physical healing, but does lead to spiritual healing – a much more important part of who you are.”   Rebecca Newell

Calming the storm by Sue Newham

When reading this account of the calming of the storm in Luke’s gospel, I was struck by the fact that professional fishermen were afraid of the storm, yet one word from Jesus restored calm. How often we feel as if we are in a storm that will overwhelm us, but Jesus provides the peace we need.

Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a live coal which he had taken with the tongs from the altar.  And he touched my mouth with it and said  “Behold, this has touched your lips; Your iniquity is taken away and your sin purged.”  Then I heard the voice of the Lord, saying:  Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. I painted this picture at Easter when my spiritual experience can feel very intense. Last year I did a very personal picture of Christ on the cross, painted from a place of penance and prayer. I realised that I cannot always be in a place of such intensity and wondered what it must have been like to feel far away from Christ, even when He was actually living amongst us. Is the message changed by our feeling of closeness or distance? I don’t think so.

Trinity by Sue Newham

The verse on the back of the greetings card reads, ” But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” John 14 : 26

“A circle has no beginning and no end. This circle is a glimpse into the Trinity, where the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are one and yet recognisable separately.” Sue Newham

Additional DescriptionMore Details

The symbols of the cross and the dove are commonly used to represent Christ and the Holy Spirit, but interestingly there is no widely used symbol to represent God the Father. I have used the creator’s hand. In the centre the three distinct colours become white, in the same way that a spinning top with distinct colours becomes white or light grey on spinning.

Covered with Grace by Cindy Norris

We have all had those times – those terrible times – when we just feel broken.  We feel stripped bare of everything which brings us peace.  It is in these times that we pray so very hard for God to come and rescue us and He pours his grace down over us, clothing us in love and peace.

On reverse of card:  “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” 2 Corinthians 12:9

He goes before them by Diane Fairfield

“This painting was inspired by a very old photo taken in Israel of a shepherd with his sheep.  I have a passion for the Shepherd message that Scripture uses so often.” Diane Fairfield

The verse on the back of the greetings card reads, “When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice.” John 10 : 4

Additional DescriptionMore Details

It speaks so wonderfully of His love for us and His watching care. Much of the area where I live looks very much like Israel so I used my own photos of this environment to support constructing the painting. The scriptures that spoke to me concerning this image are mostly from the book of John, chapter 10. I named it after verse 4: “And when he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice.” We are to follow Him in perfect peace and order.
