Breakthrough 1 by Harvey Bradley

Harvey Bradley
Initially inspired by doing a series of pen illustrations, in response to themes and text, for our local church magazine, I am developing a series of oil paintings centred on feelings evoked in me when contemplating the movement of the Holy Spirit in our world and the universe. Big thoughts often lead to stumbling sketches, that evolve into paintings over longish periods of time. Often the early compositions start life in public spaces –local churches and our Churches Together marquee at a local country show. In these settings, they lead to discussion and often an opportunity for individuals from ‘outside the church’ to tell their story. In addition to these ‘live’ painting sessions, I am interested in seeing much more contemporary artwork displayed in modern and traditional worship spaces. I think that there is a real value to people in encouraging a dialogue about the ideas and feelings triggered through creative imagery.

My idea was to express the power of the Holy Spirit smashing through the elements of the Passion to create a new reality - freed of the confines of human pain and suffering.
The verse on the back of the greetings card reads, "For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit." 1 Peter 3 :18
Initially started as a pen drawing, I developed this theme using oil pastels. This painting has been seen in a number of settings, including Chichester and Chelmsford Cathedrals, and the responses have been interesting. Most people, who have spoken to me, have been inspired by the movement of the dove (image of Holy Spirit) whilst others have noted an image (unintentional from my part) of the nativity – thus uniting the themes of death and birth (rebirth).
