Drawn to the light

Dawn Pretty

I began painting with intent as a small bored child, sat on a sunny veranda in the screaming heat of the African afternoon. I kept an eye out for the thieving baboons, and hoped that the scary twilight of our farm out in the mountainous forests would be delayed by my activities. Coaxing dull watercolours on a wrinkIy page into stallions, I willed them to be alive, eventually producing  something that enthralled me as much as the real creatures did. Living with no electricity meant flickering candlelight, and wood fires, and a close link with nature and real things. The sense of all that has never left me. The magnitude of a storm, smashing every window in our house, or a bush fire raging towards us, spoke to me of my human frailty, and the gift of life, something beyond, not controlled by my will. I was taught about God, and saw his evidence, and desired to know truth. The journey, like painting is both challenging and invigorating. I paint, with all these factors sculpting me. I endeavour to express truth and a celebration of God’s amazing creative ability, with deep gratitude for the experience.  I’m constantly aware of tapping into his beautiful intimate presence.

Drawn to the Light by Dawn Pretty

Thinking about signatures, and artists signing their work, thereby increasing their value, I noticed how all aspects of the world conform to a pattern.

The verse on the back of the greetings card reads, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8 : 12

Additional DescriptionMore Details

Be it lightning, rivers, veins in plants and animals, trees, or a person standing with arms raised in prayer to God, the shape of a Y is integral to everything. I see it as the artist's style, the signature of Yahweh. I wrote a poem and did a series of works based on this. The forked fish tails, just another example of a beautifully designed creature, signed by Yahweh. THE REASON Y In the beginning...When surprised, ‘Oh my God’ is cried. Y ‘Jesus’ Y With passion, but without meaning or intent. Words exclaimed, but no response required. In the end...’why,’ is asked. Cried. But no answer is wanted. The name of God is Yahweh. The alpha and omega, the beginning and the end. Some say the words with intent. Hear the reply. See God’s signature running through life. The Y, and the answer. Veins of truth repeatedly echoed in nature’s design. Proclaimed in lightning. Whispered as intimate chromosome. Branches signalling pathways to the knowledge of one In whose image we are made.
